And now we put our whole heart into following you,
into fearing you and seeking your face once more.
Do not disappoint us;
treat us gently, as you yourself are gentle
and very merciful.
Grant us deliverance worthy of your wonderful deeds,
let your name win glory, Lord.

From Daniel 3:25,34-43, NRSV

This extract is part of an earnest prayer offered by Azariah (Abed-Nego) – one of the 3 young Jews thrown into a fiery furnace by King Nebuchadnezzar. This Babylonian king had set up a huge golden statue of himself and then summoned all officials together for its dedication. He threatened that anyone who refused to worship the statue would be thrown into a fiery furnace. Three young Jewish men, Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego, refused to follow the King’s command and were duly summoned before the king. They continued their refusal to follow the king’s command saying that their God would be with them, and were duly thrown into the fire. The three were seen walking around in the furnace unharmed with Abed-Nego leading them in prayer. His prayer acknowledges the sin and shame of his people and their total dependence on God’s forgiveness and mercy. In the midst of great danger, he was able to offer this prayer of total commitment.

    • Did Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego know that they would be rescued?
    • Have you experienced a test of your own faith?

Pray for anyone facing difficulties and danger today.
