But you have turned aside from the way; you have caused many to stumble by your instruction; you have corrupted the covenant of Levi, says the Lord of hosts, and so I make you despised and abased before all the people, inasmuch as you have not kept my ways but have shown partiality in your instruction.
From Malachi 1:14-2:2,8-10, NRSV

The prophet Malachi has some harsh words for the religious leaders of his time. He tells them that they have failed to give glory to God through their failures in leadership, their insincere worship and their regard for the rich and powerful at the poor. It would seem that following the return of the Jews from exile, the Jewish leaders had fallen into a spiritual malaise and were, at best, simply “going through the motions”. God’s anger is not just at their actions but because of the ways in which they have failed their people and allowed them to “stumble”. Malachi makes it clear that these leaders must listen, remember the Covenant of their ancestors and give due glory to God.

    • Why do you suppose these Jewish leaders had fallen so far short of their calling?
    • What steps can we take to ensure that our worship is worthy of God?

Reflect on the ways in which you give glory to God – and be open to new ways in which you can make this happen.
