Then God said, ‘Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.’
So God created humankind in his image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
Genesis 1:20 – 2:4, NRSV

Today’s reading continues the poetic description of Creation. Having created all things that live on the earth, in the sea and sky, God creates the human being. God has a very great plan for humans – they are to be no less than co-creators, charged with the completion and care of God’s creation. Being created in God’s image suggests that humans will be as careful, proud and protective of their creation. It may be tempting to see this task as one that belonged to that particular time when the world was new and perfect. However, the need for humans to accept and live our role as Stewards of Creation has never been greater or more relevant after many years of destructive activities. God has entrusts this role as much to us as to the first humans.

    • Why did God entrust the care of the world to people?
    • Where do you see people actively engaging as Stewards of Creation?

Reflect on the actions you are already taking to care for the earth and consider whether there is anything else that you could do.
