Endure trials for the sake of discipline. God is treating you as children; for what child is there whom a parent does not discipline? Now, discipline always seems painful rather than pleasant at the time, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
From Hebrews 12:4-7, 11-15, NRSV

In today’s reading, the author addresses the matter of trial in the lives of Christians. We are reminded that trial is a fact of life to be lived and learnt from. The author uses the analogy of God as a parent administering discipline to children. For many, the word discipline may have negative overtones, and yet the word originates from “disciplus”, the Latin word for pupil which also provided the source of the word disciple. Just as a good parent will discipline their children out of love and a desire for them to learn and grow in understanding and respect, so God desires that we will grow and benefit from our training in discipline.

    • Is discipline still important in the lives of individuals and communities?
    • Can you recall an experience of trial or difficulty in your life that led to a peaceful resolution?

Many people live with the bitterness of unresolved situations. If that includes you, pray for guidance to move beyond this bitterness to the better life that God wants for you.
