Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.
From Hebrews 12:1-4, NRSV

In today’s reading, we hear the author giving words of encouragement to the Hebrews. He emphasises the need for endurance in faith by using a metaphor that would have been familiar to people familiar with the Games that were a major part of the culture of the time. He speaks of perseverance in “a race” in which we are to keep running steadily without losing sight of Jesus. He describes Christ as the perfect example of endurance and faith from whom we can find inspiration and support.

    • What difference do you suppose these words of encouragement may have made to the Hebrews?
    • When have you found yourself tiring in the “race” of faith – and what helps you to continue?

Reflect on and give thanks for those people and events who have helped you to persevere in faith – and be open to supporting others in their times of difficulty.
