Greet Prisca and Aquila, who work with me in Christ Jesus, and who risked their necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles. Greet also the church in their house. Greet my beloved Epaenetus, who was the first convert in Asia for Christ. Greet Mary, who has worked very hard among you. Greet Andronicus and Junia, my relatives who were in prison with me; they are prominent among the apostles, and they were in Christ before I was. Greet Ampliatus, my beloved in the Lord. Greet Urbanus, our co-worker in Christ, and my beloved Stachys. Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ greet you.

From Romans 16:3-9,16,22-27, NRSV

Paul brings his epistle to the Romans to an end with many personal greetings to the individuals – women and men – who had helped and supported him in his mission. It is clear that Paul had become close to these people and he wants them to know that they have not only helped him but also that their help was vital in establishing all the various churches with which they were associated. It is evident that this is a real message to real people. Paul had not yet been to Rome at the time of writing this epistle and yet it is clear that he had a established some very strong connections. Some of the people he names he had met in other places and some by reputation only but they all had their part to play as co-workers with Paul.

    • Why was it important for Paul to mention by name those who had helped him?
    • How do we value the contribution of individuals in our own communities?

Spend time reflecting on the people who have helped to shape and nurture your own faith – and thank them by name.
