When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you.’ Elisha said, ‘Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit.’

From 2 Kings 2:1,6-14, NRSV

In today’s reading we hear about Elisha succeeding Elijah as prophet to the people of Israel. This chapter from the second book of Kings begins with the announcement that Elijah’s career is coming to its end and that he is to taken up to heaven in “a chariot of fire”. Prior to this, Elijah had anointed Elisha as prophet at God’s command and Elisha had accompanied him in his mission. As his time drew to its end, Elijah wanted to cross the River Jordan alone, but Elisha insisted on accompanying him. Realising his departure was imminent, Elijah asked what Elisha what he could do for him. Recognising what had marked Elijah such a notable prophet, Elisha asked for a “double share” of his spirit. Elisha was in effect asking to be made the official heir of Elijah’s prophetic vocation. Elijah did not presume to make this his gift but promised that if Elisha were able to see him as he ascended then his request would be granted. Perhaps this was Elijah’s way of leaving the decision with God. Elisha did witness Elijah’s dramatic departure and Elijah’s mantle was duly passed to him.

  • Why do you think Elisha persisted in following Elijah to his end?
  • Who are the people whose spirit has inspired you?

Pray for those entrusted with the leadership of our faith communities and for the wisdom and discernment they need to carry out their roles effectively.
