Then Elijah arose, a prophet like fire,
and his word burned like a torch…

When Elijah was enveloped in the whirlwind,
Elisha was filled with his spirit.

From Ecclesiasticus 48:1-15, NRSV

In yesterday’s first reading we heard about how Elisha succeeded Elijah. Today we hear a eulogy to these two notable prophets who helped to restore Israel during a period of wicked rulers. The author speaks of the main events during both their ministries. In the case of Elijah, this involved several dramatic events – such as his use of fire and the raising of the dead to life. We also hear about Elijah’s attempts to warn the people of the need to “mend their ways” and of his reproofs when they did not. Elisha’s political successes are outlined, showing him to have been effective in working with the authorities of the time and his involvement in the appointment of new rulers. In their different ways, both these prophets helped the people of Israel to find their way and to be more attentive to God’s voice.

    • Why do you think God called these two men into prophecy?
    • Who are the prophetic voices of our own times and how do we discern where these are to be heard?

Pray for all who work to bring others closer to God, and especially for those who face opposition and rejection of their message.
