That day a severe persecution began against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout the countryside of Judea and Samaria.

Acts 8:1-8, NRSV

Following Stephen’s death there was intense persecution of the Christians. This persecution was now extended to all members of the Church and not just to their leaders, with people being arrested and sent to prison. The intention of this persecution was to achieve the total destruction of the community. This intention was not achieved since many Christians escaped to neighbouring districts where they continued to preach the Good News. Just as Jesus had foretold at his Ascension, the Christian message was now reaching out to Judea and Samaria and further.

    • Why did the persecution fail in its intention?
    • Does persecution of Christians still occur?

Pray for those who suffer from discrimination and oppression because of their faith.
