Because the whole world before you is like a speck that tips the scales,
and like a drop of morning dew that falls on the ground.
But you are merciful to all, for you can do all things,
and you overlook people’s sins, so that they may repent.
For you love all things that exist,
and detest none of the things that you have made,
for you would not have made anything if you had hated it.

From Wisdom 11:22-12:2, NRSV

In today’s first reading we hear about God’s limitless mercy for all and desire that all should be saved. Whilst we may welcome this message for ourselves and those we love, it may be more challenging to accept that this message really is for all people. We may wonder why such mercy should be shown to those who have committed horrific crimes without any apparent remorse. We may also struggle to accept that no-one is beyond or removed from God’s love and yet that is the message we hear repeatedly throughout Scripture and so strongly stated today.

    • What difference does it make to know that God “overlooks” our sins?
    • What should be our attitude towards those who have done great wrong to others?

Pray today for the grace to accept that God’s love and mercy are freely given for all. You may also like to pray for those who struggle to accept that God’s mercy is for them.
