Neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.
The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose,
and each will receive wages according to the labour of each.
For we are God’s servants, working together;
you are God’s field, God’s building.
From 1 Corinthians 3: 1-9 (NRSV)

The church in Corinth was, by and large, new and enthusiastic but prone to split into factions with preferences for different preachers and teachers. This has happened throughout history – right up until the present day. It is, actually, natural to veer towards people who say the things we feel comfortable hearing or who seems on our wavelength. The danger is when we see them as the key element in our faith.
As in Paul’s day, there are people who plant seeds of faith in our lives and people who water our growth (and, sometimes, prune it!) They are undoubtedly important but, like us, should, ideally, be working together for the good of God’s people.

    • Why do communities split into factions and cliques?
    • Who inspires you – sowing seeds and watering your faith?

Take some time to think about the people who have influenced you in your faith-growth. Give thanks for them.
